What kinds of disputes can I take to small claims court?
You can use the small claims court if you have a dispute with a person, company or government agency involving $5,000 or less. You might want to take a dispute to small claims court - which is called "making or filing a claim" - if, for example: (1) Someone dents your fender and refuses to pay for repairs; (2) Your new sofa comes apart at the seams, and the store will not fix it or give back your money; (3) The dry cleaner ruins your favorite shirt and will not pay you anything; (4) The landlord will not return your security deposit, even though you left the apartment in good condition; or (5) You loaned money to someone who will not pay it back.
