What can I do if I am owed more than the small claims limits?
You may want to hire a lawyer and sue in a higher court. Or, you may cut your claim to fit the $5,000 limit. For example, if a person owes you $5,400, you can give up $400 in order to bring your claim down to the $5,000 limit. However, you cannot sue the person twice - once for $5,000 and then for $400.
